Make a quick list of your items that you plan to store, including furniture, appliances, awkward shaped items not in boxes.
- Use pallets or floor coverings (such as protective sheets or tarps).
- Review the locations of outlets and consider creating an aisle or path for easy access.
When packing boxes or storage bins, make sure to not make them too heavy. You want them to be light enough to move around. Make sure to fill boxes to capacity, which will prevent boxes from shifting or collapsing.
- Store your largest items first.
- Make sure to put the heaviest boxes toward the bottom to avoid damage and collapse.
- When possible use plastic bins to store your items for long term including lids.
- Lids will limit or prevent your items from getting dusty.
Stack boxes and similarly sized items to maximize your space.
Label boxes and containers and stack them with the labels clearly visible.
- Label items on more than one side in case they are moved or turned.
- This makes it much easier if you need to visit open to add and remove items.
Make sure to pack fragile or breakable items separately and use either bins or reinforced strong boxes, filling gaps with storage peanuts or paper. Mark “Fragile” on any storage boxes containing breakable items.
- Avoid resting metal objects against other items that may rust, scratch, or nick.
- Avoid leaning furniture against exterior walls.
- Wedge open the doors of any kitchen appliances.
We will keep our facilities clean and damage free, however unwelcome visitors such as mice should always be considered. Preventative smells such as peppermint oil, cinnamon, tea tree, cloves, dryer sheets, "Irish Spring" soap (just leave a bar in each corner), mothballs, or even a spray of ammonia can keep your unit visitor free. Do not store food in your storage unit.
- Consider using plastic containers or bins to store any cloth or material based items.
- Mattress bags and heavy-duty plastic storage bags are helpful around larger items.
Dangerous items include contents such as gasoline, compressed gas, propane tanks, kerosene, lamp or motor oils, acid, grease, corrosives, fertilizers, paint, cleaners, chemicals and other hazardous materials. Do not store fireworks or explosives in your storage unit. Make sure to remove gasoline when storing motor vehicles.
